SUBARU PHILOSOPHY

The second generation Leone (1979 to 1984)

Wednesday, 5 Sep 2012

IIn 1979, the second generation THE New Leone series (4-door sedan: 1.6 L, 1.6 GLS, 1.6 GLF, 1.6 LF, 1.8 GTS, 1.8 GTL on June 1st / Hard top: 1.8 GTS, GTL, GLF on July 2nd) was launched.

The second generation Leone had the newly developed 1.8L horizontally opposed engine in addition to the 1.3L and 1.6L engine lineup.

Body dimensions were modified by lowering the vehicle height by 30 mm and expanding the tread  in the front and  in the rear. This gave the vehicle its distinctive wide and low style. Interior space was also expanded to give it a roomier feeling. The adoption of the “six-light window” design (called the opera window for hard top models) enabled a cabin with brighter and roomier rear seats and gave the driver better rear diagonal visibility. In addition to these improvements, a large impact absorbing bumper was installed onto the GTS model to improve collision safety. A graphical safety monitor was installed prominently in the instrument panel to allow the driver to check the vehicle condition in a glance.

A wider variety of models was made available by introducing the new Swingback and Touring wagon to the existing Sedan, Hard top, and Estate van lineup to create a versatile series where the consumer was free to choose their perfect combination of engine, transmission, and drive system (FF/4WD).

During the launch, Mr. Nobuo Tsuboi, the general manager of the Subaru engineering division had the following to say:

“In the ten or so years after the Subaru 1000, our technological capabilities have gone from strength to strength and we have accumulated a vast amount of knowledge. THE New Leone is a car of the future made using the culmination of all of our knowledge and experience. ‘How can we make a car standing in our customer perspective?’; ‘How can we create an enjoyable driving experience?’ We continue to search for the answer to these pressing questions while building up our practical knowledge. We want all people from Japan and around the world to see how Subaru vehicles stand out from the crowd in terms of pure excellence. Receiving all kinds of feedback will give us even more motivation to make even better vehicles. An engineer cannot waste any time. This way of thinking is at the heart of the Subaru spirit.” (Excerpt from Cartopia Vol. 84)

Continuing on from the June new model launch, autumn saw the launch of the 2-box 3-door Swingback series (1.3 LF, 1.3 E / 1.6 GLS, 1.6 GLF, 1.6 SRX / 4WD 1.6, 4WD 1.8) and the 4WD series (Sedan and Estate van) on October 6th. All 4WD 1.8L models were equipped with the dual range transmission system. In addition to the regular 4-speed transmission, this dual range transmission system allows the driver to select Hi or Lo gear ratios according to driving conditions with the help of sub-transmission. The Lo range gear ratio was set to around 1.5 times that of the Hi range.
